Laminate flooring is made from composite wood pressed together at high temperatures. The image of hardwood is then placed over the composite wood, covering it to form the laminate. Since laminate is made from pressed wood, it is more durable and resists scratches, moisture and wear and tear. It is also easier to clean.

Laminate flooring is unusual in that it does not attach to the subfloor. Foam underlayment resides between the subfloor and laminate, detaching the two surfaces and providing for a softer footfall. Floors that attach from board to board but not to the subfloor are called floating floors.
